New York City gets destroyed in “Cloverfield,” the silly-sounding monster movie that opens Friday. New York was destroyed in “Independence Day,” in “Escape from New York,” in “I Am Legend,” in “The Day After Tomorrow,” in “Planet of the Apes,” in “A.I.,” in “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” in the 1998 “Godzilla” remake, in all three King Kong movies, in the Tom Cruise movie version of “War of the Worlds,” in the radio version of “War of the Worlds” and now in the Godzilla-esque “Cloverfield.” How about a disaster movie that destroys Florida or Ohio?
I liked all these movies and most recently I saw “I am Legend” and was extremely impressed with the special effects. I think more than the plot….I am thinking “How the HELL did they do that?
When Joshua. Jonathan and I rent old movies to watch, I have managed to sneak in some old classics that I liked when I was a kid. For some reason it is a slight disappointment. It’s not like I remember it. Todays movies are so real and loud and ferocious that can we even imagine where they will be in 10 years from now? Right now I need a movie that is down to earth. That is real. That is romantic. That is safe. After “I am Legend”…I need real life…..

I am Legend was spooky because a virus like that seems very real. How did they do that? Everything is computer animated nowadays. Isn’t all the Superhero movies based in New York too? Spiderman should whip that Cloverfields butt….dontcha think? I’m sure Superman would have NEVER allowed a virus to turn people into monsters. Anyway in allot of movies…they use Toronto Canada as a “fill-in” for the New York background. Much cheaper to film up there.

One of the movies I loved as a kid and showed J&J was”Animal House”-as we were watching it, I said to myself “this sucks” what did I see in this…I mean Bulushi was awesome but maybe I realized this damn film is THIRTY YEARS OLD….it just didnt age well.

We are the Hollywood of the North here in Toronto but the people we see here from the movie industry can’t touch and could never tell the story of real life like you folk do here on this blog. Hold fast to your memories, your troubles, your accomplishments, your faith and love each other. You have something many of us don’t have a great big support system. I don’t often watch movies about the world ending but when I do I think about what I would do if we really did have notice of “the end”. Think about that.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

“I’ll have the plain ice cream, ” he said.
The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies..
You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.
